DATUK GOH CHEE LEONG

“Most people equate psychologists as a profession about ‘crazy people’,” says Dr Goh Chee Leong, Dean of the Faculty of Behavioura lSciences at Help University. “However in the last 10 years, psychologists have done a lot to broaden people’s perception of psychology, to see psychology as a the science of understanding people, and the fact that psychology can be applied in so many different ways to work, family and life in general,” he adds. In this issue, Top 10 of Malaysia speaks with this pioneering psychologist about his work and whose contributions in making the world a better place to live in are ever increasing.
Dr Goh was born in Taiping, Perak but moved to the Klang Valley with his family when he was young. He attended the Methodist Boys School in Kuala Lumpur for most of his school life. “I was actually planning to study law, but at that time many of my friends were also studying law and I’ve always felt comfortable taking the road less travelled,” says Dr Goh who then decided to study psychology which was a relatively new field in Asia at that time.“I’ve always wanted to understand and work with people so the fit was right,” he says.
After completing a Degree in Psychology at Otago University in New Zealand, Dr Goh stayed on to complete his PhD in psychology where he was conferred the Otago Post graduate Award. Despite completing his tertiar yand post graduate studies in Otago, Duned in in New Zealand remains close to Dr Goh’s heart. “It ’s such a beautiful place and I would recommend it to any Malaysian who wants a nice holiday destination,” says Dr Goh who spent 8 years there. It was also in Duned in that he met his wife.
After returning to Malaysia in 1999, Dr Goh was accorded the challenge of establishing and building up the psychology programme at Help University which has become his greatest source of pride. “ We started with 4 staff and 30 students in 1999. Now we have over1,200 students and over 50 staff at the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences, which makes us one of the largest programmes in South East Asia. This is truly an accomplishment for our staff and something our students can be proud of,” says Dr Goh.
The Faculty of Behavioural Sciences in Help University is the first psychology programme among private institutions in Malaysia. There are now over 10 psychology department in public and private universities that are progressing rapidly.
“I think our accomplishment was not just to start a psychology programme but to create a demand for graduates in the Malaysian job market so that we could maintain our 100% graduate employment rate,” says Dr Goh whois also the Vice President of Help University. “ We spent hundreds of hours with various corporations in different industries explaining why they should hire psychology graduates. We explained to them that psychology graduates had unique competencies in understanding people and conducting research,” here calls.
Like any member of the teaching profession, Dr Goh’s joy comes from seeing his students succeed and reach their full potential. “ We’ve had over 5,000 graduates over the last 13 years and I’m proud to see how each of them had found a life path that enables them to have an impact on their communities,”he says.
Dr Goh lectures in a variety of areas, including organizational psychology, social psychology, research methodology, human motivation, developmental psychology and cognitive psychology. His areas of specialization include the application of psychology to change management, conflict mediation, customer service, people management, stress management, talent management and leadership.
According to Dr Goh, most countries require postgraduate qualifications in psychology, either Masters or PhD in order to practise. In Malaysia, one can register as a psychologist if you have a Master degree in psychology. He points out that there are many different fields to specialise in like organizational psychology, clinical psychology, sports psychology, health psychology, forensic psychology, developmental psychology, school psychology and counselling psychology, amongst others.
